The Beacon High School art teachers, Claudine Farley-Davis, Mark Lyon and Jennie Duke, are looking forward to our first time having a show at The Lofts at Beacon Gallery.

We always enjoy participating in outside school community events. We are fortunate to have such a great artist community supporting the arts in the schools.

For this event we will have a variety of artwork that will be shown from our most advanced art classes like A.P art to our studio art classes. There will also be photography and digital art work.

Our students are very excited to have the opportunity to have their artwork shown in a gallery. Sometimes this is a life changing event for the student and art becomes their main focus for college.

We look forward to a great turn out and hope to see you there supporting our students.

The goal of this exhibit, besides showcasing the many and varied talents of local Hudson Valley artists, is to raise funds for an award for a Beacon High School student whose artwork will be shown at The Lofts Gallery in January. A main objective of the Hudson Valley Artisans Guild is to support young artists and promote art education in schools. The members invite the public to view the student show and vote for their favorite work, which the Guild will consider when choosing an award recipient. The BHS Show will run January thru February; dates will be posted on The Lofts site mid December

40 Years Later—Five SUNY New Paltz Grads, opening on Oct. 4 thru Oct. 31, 2014. Sculpture, Photography and Paintings by Peg Borcherdt, Dennis Connors, Jack Murphy, Robert Paschal and Peter Sheehan will be featured. An opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 4, from 4 – 8 p.m.

These BFA/MFA SUNY graduates studied and worked together 40 years ago in the former Tempo-rary Arts Building (TAB) on the New Paltz campus. After a new Fine Arts building was erected, the TAB was turned into private studio spaces for BFA/MFA candidates. This unique opportunity aided students in developing their artworks to the fullest extent. All five graduates continue to live, work and produce artworks in the Hudson Valley—40 years later.

ENERGY FIELDS, a new exhibit curated by Marieken Cochius, opens July 12
through August 26, 2014 at the Lofts at Beacon Gallery, showcasing the Hudson
Valley artists Sarah Barker, Marieken Cochius, Judy Thomas and Anna West,
with an Opening Reception on Saturday, July 19, from 5 to 8 pm.
Marieken Cochius, originally from Holland, chose the artists for this show
specifically for the current and play of energy that emanates from each of their
works. The painter Sarah Barker (Catskill) has “a fantastic ability to capture the
essence of energy or vibration from within her subjects,” says Cochius. With
meticulous strokes that almost look like tiny cowry shells radiating out from the
center like mandalas, Barker “gets it from the inside, and we, the observers, feel it
from the outside –– like a pulsating energy field,” says Cochius.
The artist Judy Thomas (Newburgh) “does drawings in space,” says Cochius.
Using materials such as plastic and panty hose, Thomas’s installation pieces loop
and arc in playful, wildly colorful forms that are “magical and create their own
energy field that the viewer can actually walk through,” says Cochius. “The lines
cut through open space like veins with a vibrancy I find attractive,” she adds.
Anna West (Beacon), who photographs ice and snow, “goes out in the world and
creates an almost sacred space or beacon of potential energy that becomes kinetic
as it melts,” explains Cochius. In her surreal, abstract landscapes, West throws
snowballs with food coloring on a selected spot, be it a frozen waterfall or a patch
of ice, then returns over the next few days to capture and highlight the dripping
and thawing. “I like the slow release that she reveals,” says Cochius.
Wappingers Falls artist Marieken Cochius’s drawings in graphite, ink, charcoal
and pastel on paper are variations or extensions of a line of a poem she wrote –
– one strand of terrifying color shivering before you. Cochius “strives for a true
line,” she says, and her drawings are made with both hands. “My left hand is
more like an antenna, more searching, while my right hand is more sure.” The
lines in her work move across the paper like ribbons of lightning that look to be
cutting through the moody cloud of a storm.

Corneyea at 845-202-7211.
